We tend to upgrade almost everything these days, except our furniture. Your furnishings tell others about your personality and tastes without saying a word. A sofa or loveseat might have more sentimental attachment than other things we own like cars or electronic devices. Our beds and living room furniture can feel almost like part of the family; and even though they are inanimate objects, we can become very attached to them. You may not even realize how long you’ve had your present furnishings until you take time to think about it. Seriously, how long has it been since you replaced your sofa? You may have completely overlooked the fact that it is getting old and decrepit. Here are a few signs it’s time to purchase new furniture for your living area.
Is your sofa sagging?
A sofa can only hold up for so long. Take a look at your sofa and see if it’s starting to show signs of wear and tear. You may be used to its sagging, but this can be a certain sign that it’s time to start looking for a new one. Fixing a sagging couch is not an option since it would be much more expensive to try to repair the framework. If your sofa is sagging after years of holding up your family, it’s time for a new one.
Did you suffer flood or fire damage?
Floods and fires are the primary way furnishings are damaged beyond repair. Even a small fire can cause smoke damage to linen furnishings. Many times, smoke is absorbed into the soft covering and leaves an odor that is pungent. Mild flooding can cause water damage and furniture can be irreparable. In some cases, wood furniture can stand through a flood, but the upholstery can provide the perfect environment for growing mold and mildew which are not only harmful to furniture, but to your health as well. If your furniture has been damaged by water or fire, it’s definitely a good idea to replace it.
Does your sofa or love seat smell strange?
Do you notice a horrible smell right after sitting down on your sofa or loveseat? Odors and stains can seep into furnishings over time. This is especially true if you’ve neglected to practice regular cleaning of the cushions. Upholstery can absorb lots of odors and eventually, they start to let those off and it can be embarrassing when someone comes to visit. If you notice odors upon sitting – it’s time for some new furniture.
Do you notice signs of wear and tear caused by pets?
Cats are notorious for using the corner of a sofa to sharpen their claws. And puppies tend to chew on anything around. These maltreatments of your sofa and occasional “accidents” can leave them torn or soiled beyond repair. These problems are not easily repaired and well, if it’s been awhile – it might be time for a change.
