One reason so many people are choosing micro suede furnishings is because of its resistance to stains. Even if you spill something directly on it, as long as it is wiped up immediately, there’s nothing to worry about. It usually comes right up without staining. However, there are some times when it’s necessary to clean up your micro suede sofa and make it look fresh and new again. This is actually very easy to do. Micro suede is often a choice for many people because it’s so easy to care for and continues to look good for a long time to come. Here are some simple ways to help you keep it looking its best.
Keep it Vacuumed and Brushed
Micro suede is a type of microfiber which means it is made up of lots of tiny fibers. These tightly knit microfibers are what helps keep allergens, dust and dirt from penetrating the surface of the fabric. However, that in no way means you should not vacuum it frequently. Vacuuming just once a week can help keep your furniture looking great. Vacuum using the upholstery brush attachment that comes with your vacuum cleaner. This helps brush the nap and helps it retain its soft feeling. You can also choose to brush the micro suede sofa or chair on days you don’t vacuum using a soft, brush made of soft, nylon bristles.
Before you Clean
Before you use anything to clean your micro suede furniture, make sure to read its instruction tag. There should be a tag that is coded with what can be used to clean the fabric. There should be a series of capital letters indicating safe ways to care for it. A “W” indicates you can use water on the fabric, an “S” means it can be cleaned with dry cleaning solvent. If you see a combination like “S-W” it means the furniture can safely be cleaned with solvent, or water. An “X” indicates it’s not safe to use any cleaning solutions on the fabric and it can only be brushed. Furniture that is marked with an “S” might be safe for using rubbing alcohol, however, you’ll want to check in an out-of-sight spot to make sure it won’t stain or fade the fabric. There are some solutions that cannot be used on micro suede furnishings such as bleach, carpet cleaner, acetone or upholstery cleaner. You may wish to call a professional furniture cleaning service to clean your sofa if you are unsure.
If your micro suede sofa is water safe, you may be able to use soap suds to scrub it down. Just a little bit of dishwashing soap in a bowl of warm water can make suds. Use a clean white, cloth to scrub the couch using a circular motion. Then use an absorbent, dry white cloth to blot the suds away. Work in small sections to keep the sofa or chair from absorbing too much water. Once you have scrubbed down all the fabric, us a nylon bristled brush to scrub it so it’s softened and blended.
Getting Rid of Stains
As a general rule, micro suede repels water and if you clean up a spill as soon as it occurs, watermarks won’t form. To clean up a spill, us a white cloth and blot the liquid until it has been absorbed away from the surface. Don’t rub the spill, blot it. If your micro suede furniture does get stained, or has watermarks, you can use rubbing alcohol to remove it. Check the label to make sure it is safe for using alcohol before you begin, or test a hidden spot to see if it is safe. Put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and lightly spritz the alcohol on the surface of the fabric and then rub lightly with a white cloth. Allow it to air dry. Then brush the spot with a nylon bristled brush.
