Living Room Colour Trends for 2016

Posted by Mary Olinger on

If you have recently purchased living room furniture, or are planning on making a purchase in the near future, you may be thinking about redesigning your living room. Modern furnishings come in a variety of colours and neutral sofas are trending. This still leaves you to think about what colour you want to paint your living room to accentuate your new furniture. There are several colours that are popular this year and it’s fun to create a whole new look and feel for one of the busiest rooms in the house.

Trending Colour Combinations

Gone are the days where living rooms are painted in a solitary colour and boxed in with white trim. Some of the latest trends are to combine dark and light neutrals, soft with pale tones, and rich tones with neutral hues. Any of these combinations can help create the perfect atmosphere and provide for a pleasant contrast of colours. Painting walls different colours is no longer taboo, and trim no longer has to be white to be stylish. This year’s trends include mixing it up a bit.

Don’t be Blue

If you want to create a calming effect, try using shades of blue in your living room colour scheme. Blue works well with a variety of neutral colours like gray. A white sofa can look stunning with a light blue background. You can combine light and dark blue tones and then add some warm shades like light orange for a pop of colour. Some shades of blue can function almost as a neutral and mesh with a variety of colours.

Shades of Gray

Gray and white can make for a modern living room design. This combination is very versatile and can be easily accented with brown shades, blues or a variety of cool shades. Brown or black living room furniture can be complimentary to a basic gray and white colour scheme. If you build your décor around varying shades of gray, you can use almost any other colours with it.

Cup of Coffee and Cream

Another trending colour for living areas is using browns with off-whites. Coffee browns complemented with light shades of cream is a popular choice. An espresso sofa fits perfectly in this comfortable atmosphere. Provide visual appeal by combining dark browns, light browns or tan with creams and off-whites to create a cozy and welcoming space, arranged perfectly to relax.

Visit the Rainforest

Natural shades like the ones found in forests have been trending for a few years now and this year is no different. Use of a variety of green shades is popular and can be nicely combined with brown, black or white furnishings. Tree and grass green give a natural, but modern feel to the décor and can go with almost any colour scheme. Mixing and matching greens can also be quite appealing.

As you can see, there are a variety of colours expected to continue trending this year. Are you ready to purchase a new, neutral coloured sofa? Maybe you’re ready to add a dark brown love seat to accentuate your brown and cream living room.
